As told by Brian Coster
I was evacuated to Ongar in the first six months of the war; this was the phoney war, and we all came back. In May 1940, I was evacuated to Blaenarvon, a mining village in Wales. The woman I was supposed to be billeted on was in hospital, so I was dragged all over the village, and ended up with another woman. My father didn't like any of this and brough me back. There's now a mining museum there, including a mine shaft you can go down. I didn't go to school. When the Blitz started, I wasn't evacuated. I went to an air raid shelter on Wanstead Flats every night. A lady started a school in her front room, and she taught a dozen of us until the school opened up again in 1941.
