It was a bad time, but I think the First World War was worse.
You had to see the funny side of things, if you didn鈥檛 you鈥檇 go under, you really would: you鈥檇 take everybody鈥檚 sorrow I with you.
You had to have a laugh on the side you know; especially when you walked in the dark to go to the pictures or anything (Even though we didn鈥檛 go to the pictures very often). You had to have a little torch to shine on your feet; otherwise you couldn鈥檛 see where you were going!
This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Becky Barugh of the 大象传媒 Radio Shropshire CSV Action Desk on behalf of Dorothy Cottis and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
