I was 8 years old when war came to Grenada. There was no shortage of food as we were all farmers but it was difficult for my parents to get flour and oil which were rationed. Wet sugar - that is sugar cane syrup - sweetend our lives.

Children used to play marbles, fly kites, go swimmimg and climb trees.

My mother was a seamstress. Our school lives weren't really affected although all boys over the age of 18 joined the army and our headmaster at the senior boys school had been in the army. I remember that if adults wanted to vote they could do so only if they had money.
