Living in a cottage with my Mother, my Father being at sea in minesweepers, I was taken out of school to work on a farm, at the age of eleven. One day while ploughing a field there was an airaid, this was a frequent event as Flamstead was near to the Luton car factories now producing tanks. My friend and myself watched a German plane hit by our guns, we watched it crash into a field near where we were working, running to see what had happened, scared stiff the pilot emerged from the plane and came towards us. He spoke to us in perfect English
and surrenderd his gun to us, being only eleven this was a mind boggling event. We then took him to the local police station to our village policeman, who then took over from us. I think we must have been the youngest to have an experience of this sort.
