An Army Nurse on leave in London,1943
Annette Le Page was a nurse who had trained in London. She came from Guernsey, which had been occupied by the Germans, so she was out of contact with her home and family. The following is an extract from the diary which is in the form of the letters which she could not send to her family.
-----
Eventually we were given our Railway warrants & we left the morning of Dec. 17th 1943 鈥 The journey was long & tedious 9.20am 鈥 7.pm (3 陆 hrs late) 鈥 Amy came to the station, but unfortunately I missed her and had great difficulty in finding my way in the blackout 鈥 however I reached 鈥32鈥 quite safely. I had a very warm welcome from the children & Billy 鈥 letters & drawings from Mavis & Annette, welcoming me & hoping I would be with them for Xmas.
Saturday 鈥 I saw Hilda & Lawrence in the morning, called at 418 to see Frank & Ethel & went to Cockfosters to see Auntie & Myra in the afternoon. Everyone was most kind & I felt very thankful to have such a 鈥渉omecoming鈥 in spite of the fact of not being able to go home. I had a letter waiting for me here from Hildred which pleased me greatly.
Sunday I did as I always wished to do, walked in at 鈥淪t Martin鈥 on a Sunday morning, unannounced 鈥 Aimee greeted me & prepared Auntie C. who of course was very pleased. Harold came in later & I got back before the
Blackout. I found everyone just the same- all very well.
Today I called in to see Rev G. Whitley at Westminster 鈥 I鈥檓 so very glad I obeyed the impulse to go. He was very pleased to see me & he gave me news of all the islanders with whom he has kept in touch & he is doing a very fine work with the boys who are leaving school & giving them excellent chances in life. I have promised to spend an afternoon with him 鈥 he asked not to forget 鈥渕y old Uncle鈥.
