Back to Barracks
After a couple of days in barracks, they issued us with a new kit, as all we were wearing was battle dress which the army had given us in Alexandria and of course we had to be issued with the naval kit. There was one rather comical and ridiculous situation in this field when they asked me what I wearing when I went over the side.
I said, "A pair of overalls."
So this chap, issuing out the kit said, "Where are they now?"
"Well, they were worn out."
"So you haven't got them?"
I said, "No, I haven't got them. I cut the legs off and the arms off to make shoes."
And he in turn said, ... "but, you haven't got them now?"
I said, "No! I haven't got them now!"
"Well", he said, "in that case, I can only issue one set of overalls, not two."
You know, sometimes I wonder how the hell we won that war!
