I used to live near Hockley railway station which had a goods depot. The station never got bombed.

We used to go to bed in our siren suits and kept wellies by the bed ready. When the sirens went off we had to go up into the stables in the goods yard with the horses. It was a big stable with the horses at one end and clean fresh straw put down for us at the other end. We had to sleep there.

A lot of Italian people came over to help on the railway.

I used to go to school with my gas mask around my neck. The school was a big church school just round the corner from where we lived.

My dad was in the Home Guard on Cannock Chase and my mum used to take me over there to see him sometimes.
