There were mock battles all round Salisbury to keep everyone on their toes. On one occasion the local Home Guard was defending Bemerton against the 鈥淕ermans鈥 who were really the Dorset Regiment. There was a Bren gun placement at the base of St. Andrew`s church tower. The Dorset Regiment marched quietly down Church Lane and through the swing gates at the bottom and took the Bemerton Home Guard completely by surprise; they thought the 鈥渆nemy鈥 was coming from Quidhampton and they were very peeved at being captured.
On another occasion the exercise was to cope with the aftermath of a bombing; I was in a house in Skew Bridge Road and was to be a casualty - I got moved to the Red House.
The Barn was Southern Command`s motor transport HQ.
