My lasting Memory of World War II is鈥 remember a landmine dropping on Bridge Street, Pendlebury. My Mother, Dad and my sister went a day or two after to look at the big crater where all the houses used to be. Also, bombs were dropped on the fields at the bottom of our avenue and sand was in spots all over the houses facing the fields. I remember going to school with my gas mask in a box on my shoulder if you went to school without it you were sent home. My Dad was in the Home Guard and Mother was in the ARP. She went fitting gas masks to everyone in the area. Also we had an air raid shelter in the back garden. It was nice inside with bunk beds.
