Get comfortable because this could go on for a while. And some of this may not be found ideal for young eyes. For years the Italians have been seen as the cowards of the second world war and nobody can deny they've not thought it but they were very brave and their fight in the war was happening right in their own towns and cities. As Mussolini forced his way into power and Germany was united with Italy as Fascist allies the people of Italy were trying to get on as best as possible. However Mussolini allowed German soldiers into Italy and the Italian people of Pignatta Della Majoro and the neighbouring town of Bellona were very much against this, as was major parts of Italy. The Germans did'nt treat the Italians with respect at all, my grandma lived across from a police station and the germans raided it completely. They burnt a silk wedding dress that had been made for the daughter of the constable, they took the brass frying pan from its rack and basically excreted in it and the brass pans in Italy were very important, they were a sign of good cooking skills and pride in your cooking. The frying pan was then thrown into the street. Noble allies you thought I think not. The germans were stationed in These two towns and in the streets the children would play. When my Aunty Philomena was playing a german came up to her and pointed a gun to her head and in broken italian said "i'm going to kill you". My aunty was 8 years old and he didn't shoot her thankfully but regretably shot an old man who was walking up the street pushing the butchers cart instead through his left ear in front of my aunty. In the town of Bellona a german soldier was found dead probably from eating wild mushrooms probably. But the town of Bellona was blamed for his MURDER. Well the Germans expected a person to own up for the murder but nobody had done it. so around twenty five to thirty people were lined up and made to dig their own graves. One of these people was the town PRIEST! He was defiant and said no german would kill him so he threw himself in and killed himself, the others women and men were shot into the grave. To say there was only bad german soldiers would be politically incorrect and wrong anyway, as when the americans bombed Italy as they did regurlar, a german soldier pushed my grandmas family into the bomb shelter to save them from the bombs, he died that night as he was killed by the blast of a nearby bomb. So a bit of hope amongst many brutes. However not all germans were nice like that. The german soldiers would look for the 'signorinas' the young girls of 14+. They would not know who was oldest they would guess by grabbing the girl with the biggest feet, this was so they could basically rape them, in gangs and this was a regurlar occurence in the villages. And it was either 'do it or die'. I could go on but i think you will be tired by the time you finished reading this paragraph so thank you for reading and understand that not all Italians were useless cowards.

Message 1 - Not all Cowards

Posted on: 10 September 2003 by Sydney Hetherington

Indeed not. I can recall an Italian prisoner of war who was working on a friend's farm just outside Redditch, Worcestershire. The famer was engaged in putting a rather fractious bull to a cow in the barn when the bull turned and attacked the farmer. The farmer fell, injured and would have suffered worse but for the Italian who, immediatly attacked the bull to attract him away from the farmer.

The bull turned to attack his new enemy who ran out of the barn with the bull in pursuit across a slippery rick yard. As they approached an open stall, the Italian threw himself sideways. The bull, unable to stop careered into the stall. The Italian quickly closed the stall gate on him before returning to tend to the farmer.

No, the Italians were not cowards, just ordinary men forced into a fight they did not believe in
