I was at home on leave and had been out with my mates on the booze. Coming up the street in the blackout I came across a small crowd of people outside my parents house. They were surrounding a small dog on the ground which had been knocked down and was injured. The dog belonged to the local vicar who was distraught and unable to administer comfort to anyone, let alone himself.
Somebody said we had better take the animal to the vet, which was a mile away in Jeffcock Road. So we borrowed a pram off a neighbour and I volunteered to push it to the vets.
We looked most comical. As we came round a corner, there was a drunk swaying along towards us who upon seeing an RAF man pushing a pram with dog in it and a parson following could not believe his eyes and collapsed on the floor. We left the dog at the vets, where the surgeon said he thought that it had a fractured pelvis and that's the last I saw of the parson and the dog.
