They were so generous! Sometimes, when troop trains were coming through, the line got too congested and they were stopped by the signal and they would throw sweeties out of the windows to us.
At one time they were putting telphone lines up along the Wilton Road; they had coffee and donuts which they shared with us.
A really good place to go was up at the American camps near Wilton. And near Fugglestone Church there was basketball every Sunday with American teams coming from all over. Crowds of people went and there was tea, coffee, sweets, biscuits!
The American club was where Woolworths is now.
This was the first time we saw black people.
