I watched last nights raw recruits and was wondering how do you get to do something like that?

I mean I want to try some military training but I don't want a career in the forces. Does anyone have any information on this?

You have not put your age onto your posting.

If your are school age, and I apologise if you have passed that milestone, you could try the Army Cadet Force. This is a totally voluntary organisation that offers a lot to youngsters.

If older there are often WW2 re-enactment groups that has a strong social as well as historical side to there activities. You might find those in local newspapers.

Sorry about not mentioning my age, I am 18, nearly 19 and currently studying at university.

There is the universities OTC but I dont know if they are all party party party type or all serious similar to the Sgt on the programme.

One re enactment I wouldnt mind participating in is the 101st airborne jumps.

Do you have any information of places in Scotland, either central or the North East (Aberdeen Area)

Hi Andy

I don't know how OTC works but it may be worth finding out by talking to some of the members to see if it is what you want, or if there is any committment required.

I used to be in a Cadet Force at my secondary school and we treated it quite seriously but had a great deal of fun.

I don't know much about re-enactment groups but if you find out what are the local regiments there is often a museum and they may have some insight as to where to ask. Scottish regiments take their (proud) heritage very seriously

I don't know about re-enactment of the 101 Airborne which was an American Division, which has been featured along with their sister division the 82nd - or the "Screaming Eagles" as they were known - in many a Hollywood saga - where they performed many wondrous acts of derring do.
As you are close to the NE of Scotland I would suggest trying the HQ of the Gordon Highlanders who had a part to play in both the British Airborne Divisions - the 1st and 6th.
as well as the 15th Scottish Airborne.
The 1st Division seemed to be the most involved of any Airborne - including the German - as they dropped into North Africa - then Sicily - and finally Arnhem, where they lost 8,000 men in one week ! But first thing - you must get 110% fit as the first part of your training will be to jump off a 12 foot high wall - without breaking any bones !After the first couple of jumps - you might re-consider the Cadets !Best of Luck !
