I was recently chatting to my grandchildren and family about the 1939-45 war and remembered a German plane coming down on the Halfpenny Lane side of Pontefract Barracks. As I was in Gordon Street School at the time (the top school) with a view of the fields towards the barracks, my friends and I played truant at the afternoon playtime and went across the fields to see what we could see. When we got there the police and the military were on guard and we could not get near the plane. We went the next day and it had gone but on scrounging around I found the nose-cap of an anti-aircraft shell. Naturally the next day our Headmaster admonished us.
