I used to shelter on Tooting Bec Common with my baby. I used to take a pillow, nappies, bottle etc. in a carrier bag, together with a rope. There were no seats, only benches so I put my baby on the pillow and tied him in with the rope so he couldn鈥檛 fall off if I fell asleep. Raids were every night and after the Common, I used the street shelters. We just went dressed as we were, no time to change. Sometimes we went on the underground and slept on the platform, but we had to get there early. On one occasion, a policeman told me to leave as there was a time-bomb outside Tooting Bec hospital, due to explode. We then had a cage for an indoor shelter. Next door had an Anderson shelter and they would let us use it.
