This is from the reminiscences my father told me.

One day we were all in the shelter in the garden and there was an air raid and we heard a noise in the front of the house. There was a fire engine and my Father went to see what had happened. The shop next door had left all the lights on ( Wrong Switch ) so dad had to turn them off quickly. He was 6 foot 2 and used a broom to smash them. This would stop the planes seeing the light.
