Wherever we were we had to take our gas masks, but life in the country was very different to town life in many ways. We had half a dozen chickens, rabbits and vegetable patches. At Easter mum put cochineal so that we had pink boiled eggs for Easter. If there were too many eggs Mum used to pickle them in a big jar.
We children used to sleep in a Morrison shelter in the front room of the house while Mum and Dad slept on a mattress outside. Gas masks were kept on top of the wardrobe. Sometimes there were bombings and we saw the doodle bugs go over which was very scary.
