I went to school at Stoke works. When there was an air raid warning we were sent to local houses until the all clear. This was before the shelters were built on the playground. The school was near the railway and we used to watch the tanks going out on the trains and the wounded soldiers coming back to Barnsley Hall.
The Cadbury boats came up the cut with crumb made at Blackpole on their way to Bournville. The boatees gave us crumb as there were no sweets. At night we walked across Dodderhill common thro the church yard to the Search Light and Gunnery emplacement at Webhouse Lane. The soldiers had a chat and gave us tea. We had civil Engineers billeted with us putting oil tanks in ICI for fuel storage. After the war I was invited down to London with them and was there for VJ Day. It was a great day.
I was amazed at all the damage done in London. Some of the bombs were filled with sand by the French which meant they didn鈥檛 go off. One like that fell on St Pauls so the that was lucky.
