John Slack on the far right with General Smutts of South Africa

My stepfather John Slack lived in Alfreton, when leaving school he did not need to go to work straightaway as he had quite a lot of stepsisters and I presume they all contributed to the upkeep of the house. His time was not a happy one there so as soon as he turned sixteen, he joined the Royal Marines. Eventually becoming a sergeant, he went through the ranks quite quickly. Whilst serving in the Marines, he met many of the nobility. He served on the ship that took King Haakan away from Norway when the Germans invaded and was also on the same ship that took him back again when the Germans were defeated. He also served on board a ship with the Duke of Edinburgh.

My stepfather was also on the ship that took the Royal Visit to South Africa and he not only met the British Royal Family but also had his photograph taken with General Smutts, the Premier of South Africa.
