This story was submitted by ERSKINE on behalf of Anne Godfrey.

I was six years old at the start of World War 2 and lived in Gartloch. I remember two of my brothers being called up, then my other brother (Jack Sievewright) enlisted. Jack got engaged just before going off to war, he was the most friendly, nicest person you could imagine. Everyone had something nice to say about Jack, he was a very special person. His commanding officer sent letters telling us how popular he was and how very brave he was.
I’ll never forget the day they brought the telegram — I cry every time I think about it. Jack was killed three days after D Day, we still have the telegram and the letters from his commanding officer.
