During the war many industries and businesses were appointed new tasks to help with the war effort. The mills surrounding Lisburn started making parachutes and various other things instead of their normal production lines. Barbour鈥檚 Mill in Lisburn was a large mill, which contributed greatly to the war effort by making such things as new nets for the fishing boats to ensure a supply of fish. RFD in Dunmurry made rubber life rafts. There were aircraft factories in County Down, Castlereagh and Belfast and of course the shipyard in Belfast which built frigates and destroyers.
If you were highly qualified in any of these businesses especially the shipyard, you were not allowed to join the armed forces. Many farmers were turned down from the Army so as to keep the farms producing food.
