During the Battle of Britain in 1940, George tried to volunteer.

George was called up when the call up was for everyone under 30. Teaching had been a reserved occupation until then.

Before that happened, he went to volunteer when it was obvious that call up would occur, as he thought he might get a better choice of war service if he volunteered. At the recruiting office he was told they might "need a man" in the navy. He was too academically qualified for any of the jobs on the list at the recruiting office: they tried to match people to jobs to some extent. ((But there were a lot of mismatches: 2 of the most intelligent people George knew, who were destined for RAF intelligence, spent a long time being mess orderlies.))

George therefore waited for call up.
