I changed from a student in Holland to become a R.N. during the occupation of the Germans. The management of the hospital where i worked were german nuns who settled in Holland post WW1.
In October '44 we were liberated by the British:Something I will never forget, despite the heavy fighting we had to endure. The patients in the hospital, where I worked ,were moved from the cellar to better accomodations. We nurses still were in the cellar. One nite we heard tap-taptap.Somebody sending Morse code??I told this to a British officer. We knew that there were tunnels under the hospital, but did not know of any drawings of such. This officer decided to send a detail into the tunnels to find out what was going on.The result was:a German in contact with another in the tower of the Basilica downtown.
Well, you can imagine how happy we were when we saw an MP on a motorcycle. Behind him was THE German, hands tied behind his back, being driven through one of the side exits to his REWARD,we hoped.

Dear ODYSSEE

I have read all your stories (Snapshots #1. #2, #3, and earlier posts) with great interest. All vivid accounts of life in occupied Holland.

I look forward to reading more.

Kind regards,

Peter
