Sid North joined the Northampton Home Guard when it was set up in 1940. There were no weapons available. He had a shotgun, but all the others only had pitchforks. The Northampton Home Guard were sent to the south coast to relieve the hard pressed local Home Guard. The person in charge said to Sid 鈥測ou鈥檙e a country boy, go and catch some rabbits鈥.
We had some prisoners of war working on the farm. They had their own lorry and would arrive for work from their Broughton Park camp at 8.00am each morning and leave again at 6.00pm. The Italians did not work as hard as the Germans. Imagine what would have happened in Germany if our POWs had been given a lorry!
