Shortly after the cinema was bombed, killing all the children inside (part 1) the cinemas were closed. I remember fire-watching during air raids, and getting tangled in a rope hanging down from a runaway barrage balloon, which swept across our back garden. It slammed me against a wall, ripping the sleeve from my coat...a near miss! On D-Day we were sent home from work, the sirens were non-stop.I stood with Dad watching the dogfights overhead. During a lull Dad was talking to a neighbour, when the dogfights resumed. As I ran out with his tin helmet, a piece of shrapnel struck me a glancing blow, tearing my coat, but I didn't get a scratch ... another near miss!
