I tasted my first cup of tea at the age of 12 out of a cracked white and blue enamel mug passed to me through the cracks of our Anderson Shelter. The house in the next road had fallen onto our shelter because a bomb had landed on it. My mother and I had been trapped there for nearly a day. When my father got home from work he told the ARP warden that we were still in there- nobody had looked for us.While they were pulling the rubble away they handed each of us a mug of tea- my first ever which comforted us because it took a very long time before we got out.
Another time during the war I missed the Newcross Woolworths rocket attack by just a few minutes because my mother had lost her purse. I was to go to Woolworths to buy baby ribbon if possible. When I reached the bottom of Clifton Hill there was an almighty crash which was the rocket exploding. The ARP warden gave me a clip around the ear and told me to go home, but instead I went to the High Street and when I eventually got home I got another wallop from my father for not going straight home.
