During the war there was Sound Locating Battery at the top of Woodside Bank with a searchlight, which acted as an early warning system for enemy aircraft. There were no anti aircraft weapons located there. At another location nearby in Consett there was a look out post which was constantly manned. On one occasion a spitfire got into trouble overhead and was flying low, a lad peered above the lookout post to see what the noise was and then was beheaded by a wing of the spitfire. The spitfire crashed down soon after that.
