John was a conscript in England at a place called Marsden. There he patrolled the coast.
John was 20 when the war started and travelled to India, South Africa and Burma. Mosquitoes, leeches and scorpions were a problem in these countries. While he was in Burma, a medical plane took someone to India. When fighting he had four grenades, and had fifty ammo hidden.
John remembers it being difficult to get to sleep because of the planes and the sirens going off all the time. Before the war when he was younger he didn鈥檛 have meals very often and was always hungry. His parents had control of the rations and they didn鈥檛 get many luxuries such as butter. They had to carry gas masks around in case of gas attacks - these gas masks were kept in cardboard boxes.
He used to go to the cinema during leisure time; he enjoyed cowboy films the best. He also used to play the accordion to keep him and others entertained. After the war John was extremely happy. The street he lived in had a street party to celebrate the end of the war.
