Myles and Grace O'Shaugnessy
Home
A few days after this, I left barracks to go home on leave. I got about three weeks I think. I can remember arriving at the top of Strathmore Drive. There wasn't a soul about. I had my kit bag with me, and I just stopped at the top of the road and looked down. Now, where were all the flags, and the buntings and the cheering crowds that somebody had said would be bound to meet you, but there was nobody there! So, I sat down, I had a little sob and then a little dog came up, so I patted him and said "How do you do?" He said, "woof woof", just like that. So I walked down Strathmore and reached the house and went up the path and there was the pram on the doorstep. I looked inside and there was little baby Kevin. He was such a little, cuddly thing you know. Then the door opened and Grace, who had seen me from the window, came out.
I was home on double rations, which pleased the family, no end; I didn't need them; they did.
