The first recollection of WW2 was the introduction of the blackout. I was 5 years old and I remember the huge effort to blackout all the windows in the street where I lived. There was almost a Party feel about the process. Every one in the street placed suitable curtains or whatever method they chose to exclude light from showing. It must of been quite an expense for most families but at the time I didn't think of that problem. The whole street came out after dark to check the results and comment on any houses which did not have complete blackout. For the remainder of the war The cry of "Shut that light off" from Airraid wardens still rattles through my brain.
