MRS. ANNE JOHNSON.

THE KNITTERS.

Location: Sheffield — South Yorkshire.

There are lots of stories I remember but one that springs to mind is one of when I was at school as a 10yr old.

Firshill History Class.

I think the ship was called HMS Sheffield. Once a year we used to receive a great big carton full of wool, to be knitted up and sent back to the ship.

The teacher, being a clever knitter, would knit the Captain’s polo jumper, then the socks (not many could knit them). We did love to ask friends and neighbours to help with them. Next came gloves without fingers and because I could knit them, I thought of myself as a real ‘clever clogs’.

The ones that were not so good at knitting made the scarves. Needless to say I think the sailors had a long wait.

I can, and I still do knit to this day.
