The night they bombed Colindale Aerodrome I was in a shelter in Sunny Garden Park, which was a huge above ground shelter. Loos were in a canvas sheeted area. Played noisy games to protect the children from the noise of the bombing. In the morning we would collect shrapnel and sometimes it was too hot to pick up.
At school I was learning German. I remember going without sweets and using powdered milk to make a cream filling for cakes. They bought something in called snook which was whale meat.
Bomb dropped near Gaumont Cinema in Hendon Central. Used to knit gloves, socks, scarves and balaclavas for the services and these were on a stand in foyer of cinema and they blew off the stand when bomb fell.
Putting the gas mask on made me feel sick. Very awkward to always carry.
