I was born at Langley Mill on the 14th July 1926. I lived with my Grandmother, Emily Long and Parents, Bernard and Doris Goodall in Ebenezer Street for about 6 years. The house then had to be pulled down due to the expansion of the Aristoc factory. When war was declared I was still at school. All schools were closed down and our school teacher, Mr Jack Greenhalgh, from Eastwood saw one of us and said if we would like to go up to his home and he would run a school from his home until the schools resumed. It would only be things of interest to us such as map reading and the history of the area. He would take us on walks to places such as Beauvale Priory and fields and places mentioned in D H Lawrence. We had a lot of respect for him.
