After a night of German bombers overhead morning came with a surprise. A parachute was over the top of the walnut tree opposite our bedroom window. It was at the edge of the field outside our garden. Later we heard the story. It was Mr Wyatt's tree his eldest son was in the home guard, he heard a rustling sound in the walnut tree during the night. He called out 'Who is there?' a reply came back in German, he asked the man to surrender his gun and took him inside the house where the weapon was placed on the dining room table. The German was the pilot, the only crew member to survive, having been saved by the tree. In no time at all Norman Wyatts mother had come in with a tray of tea and cups, she pushed the gun aside and offered a drink to all in the room. Mr Wyatt, Normans father phoned the police military men arrived to take responsibility, after the Home Guard's Norman Wyatt had done his duty.
