I was only a boy when the war started but I remember when there were hundreds of boats lined up along here (Derry harbour). Derry was used as a port by N.A.T.O. and all the boats came here as a last stop before they went on a long journey, usually the Atlantic.
The Germans must have heard about Derry. It was a dry port and many boats were repaired here. The dropped a parachute bomb above Derry but there was a very strong wind that day and it blew the bomb way off course and it landed on four houses in Pennybrook, flattening them and killing seven or eight people. The Germans actually apologised for that, they didn鈥檛 mean to kill those people.
