Lance Corporal Alexander Barr, 193 Field Ambulance RASC

TO THE OPPRESSED PEOPLE OF EUROPE

Lift up your hearts, all you who are oppressed
The liberating army soon will come
No further need for you to be depressed
Your lands will soon be cleared of Nazi scum.

Lift up your hearts, soon now you will be free
At liberty to live again in peace
Swift will the allies retribution be
Your slavery and bondage soon will cease

Lift up your hearts, you’ve suffered for a while
Our armies soon will sever every chain
Once more you’ll learn how to laugh and smile
ere long — forget your misery and pain.

Lift up your hearts, renew your faith in God
Your prayers to him have never been in vain
The tyrant’s blood will crimson dye the sod
Freedom and liberty once more will reign.
