Before we were liberated by a Welsh regiment we still had Germans in our city. One german tankcommander put his tank under the portico of our Hospital. We had moved the remaining patients to the cellar on mattresses.Across the street was a canal.A Tommy had parked his tank there with the gun aimed at the german tank.Who would shoot first??We knew that if the Tommy shot first the shell would have eliminated the german tank, but it would have killed everyone in the cellar as the shell would have gone through the frontdoor.A small group of us decided to talk to the german tankcommander and ask him whether he would move his tank to a side streetThis 脺bermensch ,an SS tank commander poked his head through the turret ,looked at us in disdain and said;"Nein!KRIEG IST KRIEG!" and proceded to fire his gun and killed the Tommy. We were skaking with rage and feeling so helpless .!
We hope this German got his come-uppance in the battle won by the Allies who fought 5 hard days . Many fighting men and many people from the Underground and a lot of citizens lost their life.I still have a VHS video put together with film shot by the army and several interviews with citizens who were in the battle.
