I was a child of 9, living in Victoria Terrace. The day war was declared I was sitting on top of a muckstack - the pit had been modernising from early days and ran tubs with ponys.
There were blocks of houses - one row were back to backs whilst others had front rooms. I could see people coming out of the houses and going next door then running outside and talking to other people - I knew something was happening, but didn't know what.
