BY MARY AMBLER
I lived at Norris Castle Farm, East Cowes I.W. When I was 17 yrs. Old . My uniform came from Womens Land Army, Epsom Road, Guildford, and the first job I had at Norris Castle was handling a horse and milk-cart, and the cows. We delivered milk round East Cowes from 16th Nov. 1945 to 30th Nov. 1950. I was released from W.L.A to have a baby (formerly Miss Booth, by now I was Mrs. Ash ) I rejoined again on 24th May 1948 and continued until 30th Nov. 1950. At that time I had a Membership card from Mrs. Hull, and from Mrs. P. Madeley from Winchester for a new pullover and new gum boots size 6 !!
Then I was sent to Godshill Farm, Godshill I.W I lived in the village where there is now a big Tea Garden just before the Godshill Pub. I did milking and helped to look after the German and Italian prisoners of war working in the fields. At weekends I sometimes took them to Shanklin Cinema on our Land Army bus. We had to sign them out and back in.
Then I moved on to Werrar Farm, and Chawton Farm, both at Northwood, Cowes I.W. I looked after the cows at both farms, and did a milk round at Newport.
I finished up still at the farm, but as a landlady in a Public House in Cowes. !!
