I was hop picking at Newnham Bridge near Tenbury when war brole out. I was 13. My family went hop picking every year from Blackheath, in the Black Country. I remember a landmine dropping on Blackheath and the big public shelter in the town where the market is now. I started work at 14 years of age I was doing war work making nuts and bolts. My mother said that I would not be able to go hop picking again. So at hop picking time I gave up my job so that I could go picking and after the hop picking was over I went back to the factory and asked if I could have my job back. I did that all through the war.
