I joined the Royal Observer Corps in 1943 prior to my 18th birthday, plotting all aircraft over a wide area in the Centre Operations Building, opposite the Biddenham Golf Course. Working a 48 hour week, on shift duties day and night. Bedford itself and area had many service men and women, USAF based at Thurleigh, Befordshire. Their Officers' Mess Club was situated on the St Peter's Tennis Club grounds on the corner of Kimbolton Road and Goldington Road. Temporary accommodation was built for them. Many famous American film stars came over, including Glen Miller, who was based at Milton Ernest Hall. He played frequently for dances at Thurleigh and the Corn Exchange in Bedford. He made broadcasts as well. The 大象传媒 Symphony and Light Orchestras also were in Bedford, the Head Office being in Bushmead Avenue. They broadcasted at the Corn Exchange - also the Theatre Orchestra at the Granada Cinema, Bedford.
