"Of course, my sister being killed upset my mother very, very much, and also my brother having to leave the service because he was wounded. But she carried on, she used to get, make things, cook things from the rations we had. We used to pool things with the rations we had, after the war, things were still in very short supply. It was better to sort of pool the rations, and make perhaps a couple of decent meals, sort of thing. There weren鈥檛 many people with the refrigerators then, and that sort of thing, but when you look back, it was marvellous how we did manage."
