Kitty Carew

A second ‘Airgraph’ is in my Grandmother’s familiar writing addressed to John Shaw at the 64 General Hospital, Middle East Forces. It reads:
Dear John,
We were sorry to hear you have been hurt and do trust by now you are well on the mend. Your Mum wrote and told us and we had to greet Kit with the news on her leave home which started on July the 7th. Hurry up and get well John dear. She is worried over you and just lives for your recovery and your return to her. Today the 16th July, Kit returned from leave and an hour before the train she received a beautiful letter from the Chaplain of your Hospital, it put new life in her John, thank him so much from us all. Did you receive the cable she sent you while on leave? All the family sends love including Audrey. May God bless you John dear and get you better for us all. Yours sincerely N and V Carew

A third ‘Airgraph’ was written by my grandfather, Victor Carew on July 21, 1942.
Dear John.
Firstly may I, on behalf of all, kitty included, hope you are by now feeling better and recovering from your wounds. We have heard from your mother that she has received news of you very kindly sent by the nurse and we all give her many thanks for it. Cheer up John, there are better days in store for us and always bear in mind, your mother and all, both at Liverpool and here are thinking of you always. Kitty has been home on leave and is very happy in the service and we are very proud of you and her. Now hurry up and get this lot over and come on home. Closing now with love from all. N and V Carew.

The last two Airgraphs are marked with blue stamps ‘Undelivered. Return to Sender’ With them is a photograph stamped ‘Photograph supplied by Graves Registration Service M.E.F. It is of a Cross with the words:
“ No 4392262 PTE. J. SHAW 7/GREEN HOWARDS. 25.8.42.
