I have been working for almost a year researching the V1 and V2 attacks on South London. (see my personal page). One incident that was of particular interest to me was the V2 that fell in Court Lane Dulwich on the 6th January 1945. This was because my Grandparents lived in Dovercourt Road only a few yards away. I remember when I was little (in the 1960's) Nanna talking of a bomb and that she had been given a quilt made by American women as her house had been damaged (be it slightly). Recently I mentioned this incident to my father, Tony Henden. He will not have been able to recall the actual bomb because he was away in the Airforce. However, what he could remember was very striking and poignant. When he was visiting his parents, he recalls seeing the devasted houses in Court Lane, and in one of the houses a wall and chimmney were still standing. High up on the chimmney, still in place and unmoved by the blast was a picture of Christ.
It must have been hanging in one of the rooms and somehow, survived the blast.
This seems such a poignant and almost mysterious memorial to the 7 people who died in these houses. My father had never mentioned it before but it clearly was a vivid memory from almost 60 years ago.
