The last time a saw my family was for my birthday in July '43.Later I learned about their experiences:A bomb fell on their doorstep but did not explode. The Germans refused to defuse it..Somebody did(The fire dept.?)The front door was off it's hinges,a deep crater in front of the doorstep, the sewer system inoperable.
One of the men whom my mother harbored, dug a latrine in the backyard.Live and learn.I was on my own, working in the hospital. The prescribed hose and shoes were replaced by what we had .The chambray(?) uniforms were indestructable .My shoes started to get holes .But that problem got solved by a cobbler I took care of.He saw it and as happened during the occupation:people helped each other; He had a store close where we were billeted. When he was released ,he put new LEATHER soles under my shoes:Wonderful to have dry feet again..My youngest sister and her buddies across the street used to go the area where hothouses were in a field. After a bombardment of the British all windows were blown out. That made picking up tomatoes, potatoes and whatever veggies were avalable a lot easier. Fresh produce! One day she was picked up during a razzia and was going to be transported to work in Germany. She bluffed her way out.She said she knew the "OrtsKommadant"(not so,just his name)As a German one does not fool around with such a person. She escaped, but had to lie low for sometime.
I had a small Philips radio,I would defend with my life(.I would have been killed if it was found by a German).
We listened to the first bars of "Beethovens' Fifth' and listened to the news and messages of the underground:"The tomatoes were transported without damage.".Apparently that was meant for the area where my mother lived:The underground managed to have transported people across the river Maas safely. To be continued.
