We were in the Air-raid shelter, and the bombs were dropping. It was my 21st birthday, or the day before, and I鈥檇 got a pair of Blue suede shoes which were very hard to get. You鈥檇 have coupons, never mind the money. And we were there hours, and people wanted to spend a penny. And there was no toilets, no seats. They decided the women could go down 鈥 it was pitch black, nobody could have seen you anyway. And I thought, 鈥渕y feet are lovely and warm鈥 鈥 somebody had peed over my blue suede shoes!
[You got a special new coat during the war, didn鈥檛 you?]
It was made like an officer鈥檚 coat, with the pockets sitting out and the double-breasted buttons and all. It was really in style then.
