I was un the territorial army before th war started aged 17 years and by joining before a certain date I avoided military conscription.
but I wascalled up at outbreak of war and eventialley was posted to St Johns Wood Barracks with LASCO London Aera Signal Co and by the time I was an NCO largely due to my knowledge of radio.
It was say August one night, thge air raid warning was on permently..
My officer said to me take a lorry and two men an report to woolwich arsenal to give telephonic assistance to acertain captain ,who i had to find .I took all gear on lorry to do this..
The officer was found in one of the brick huts used for ammo making he was sleeping on the cocrete floor with about 59 men. so after thundering trhrough the nigt i had to rig him up with a telephone net to ,this i could not beleive that in amongst these hundreds of huts spies were signalling to aircraft bombing the docks in london..
Not so splly really as in the first world war the glint of the cgystal palace culd be seen by zeppelins and aircraft .My dad always said that this is why it was burnt down . It was a sure fix for air war.
WE spent every night for a week at Woolwich. And there were few all clears all the week.
No one talked in thse days so no one really knew what was going on. so does anyone know what happened.
