Last Ambulance From Dunkirk
I am a Dunkirk Veteran aged 95 now, and this is my real-life story of my Dunkirk experience.
I was attached as an ambulance Driver to the 159 Welsh Ambulance Unit. I was one of three ambulances ferrying wounded from a Dunkirk Dressing Station, and the Germans were only two miles away. After the other two ambulances had left My vehicle was the only one left , and was the last away. I lefy with the Officer Surgeon and the remaining wounded, and with shells dropping all around we eventually made it back to the jetty. When the vehicle immediately in front of me was hit by a shell, I'm not ashamed to admit that I kept going by saying the Lords Prayer to myself, as we hurrily loaded the wounded onto the Royal Navy Destroyer , and disabled the Ambulance by a machine gun burst through the engine.
It was great to share my experiences after 60 years which still remain vividly in my memory after all this time..
Tom

Dear Tom,
Was the Surgeon with you in the ambulance Major Philip Newman. He was my father and will be featured in the 大象传媒2 programme on Dunkirk on February 20th.

Good Evening,
I spoke to my Uncle this evening, and although he cannot exactly remember the name after all this time. He clearly remembers that he was a high ranking Major Surgeon , and that he and the remaining casulties were the very last to leave.Actually, he remembers that the Major was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery . He was very excited to think that this may have been your father. He will be pleased to answer any more questions etc..

My late father ,RSM Evan John Williams served with the 159 Welsh Field Ambulance at Dunkirk . His Commanding Officer asked for volunteers to attend to the wounded in the docks and explained that the last group had been wiped out to a man. He explained that he only wanted soldiers who were single but they all stepped forward to volunteer. The CO had tears in his eyes. My father survived and managed to board a ship but someone said that there was a sound of a wounded soldier coming from the dunes . He set out with a Surgeon only to find a German soldier mortally wounded .They administered Morphine and he thanked them for their kindness. They then had to dash for the ship and just managed to scramble on board before it left.
I wonder if anyone remembers my father.
