I was a pupil at Oliver Goldsmith School in Peckham, London, we were told to go home and get ready for evactuation, our school was combined with the senior school from Summer Road. We were told to bring our gas masks and a change of clothes in a small case or parcel. We went to Sutton station and were sent to Storrington in Sussex, where we were billetted on the local people.
I was 10 years old and because of the shortage of beds I had to sleep with an old boy of 78, my mother came down and decided to take me back to London, that was o.k. until the biltz started, I used to go donw to Kensington underground station every night and sleep on the platform with hundreds of other people it was very scary.
Then on the night of the big fire bomb raid on London my father was seriously injured he was an ARP warden full time at no.9 post Lambeth he was the only survivor out of 45 people, the church took a direct hit and it took 7 hours to dig him out. After that he made me promise to go back to Sussex with my grandmother, who had brought me up from when I was 2 weeks old. We found some nice digs, and we stayed there for the rest of my schooling at Thakeham School Storrington.
