Vera Anderson appreciated and learnt many lifetime lessons while she was living through the war period. She was a woman who was always stationed in her local area and worked on the land and therefore communicated with new people and went through new experiences. However, she certainly saw the war as one of the memorable factors within her life.
In 1941 Vera worked in a petrol pump factory. She was satisfied with this adequate occupation and was proud that she could also pay a little contribution in enabling Britain to pull through the war. Being a optimist and a lively person, she wanted to try out a more adventurous job. She debated this idea with her father and he agreed. Of course, Vera wanted to open a new door of opportunity in the path of her life. Vera joined to work in association with the Land Army, I might emphasise the word 'with' as she was not in the Land Army. Vera's main job was to do potato picking. She commented on the climate and the streaming rays of heat shining down on her as day after day she walked the continuous stretches of bare fields. She tried this job but felt it didn't suit her, working along side the Land Army was tiresome. So she decided she wanted something in which she could achieve her potential. She joined the ATS, she did 'anthing and everything'. She enjoyed her time in the ATS very much; she worked alongside individuals of all characteristics and didn't find the job too troublesome.
Vera very much admired the Prime Minister Winson Churchill, as she stated:"he kept the morale of the people up". However, seeing her brother leave home to join the army was one of the hardest issues she had to cope with. She found it difficult emotionally to watch a loved one depart from home to go into the army. One aspect of the war really terrified her, that was seeing the U2 bombs being exploded, she could not bear to see the flames that emerged from them.
Despite the bad times, she generally felt proud that she had been through such a dramatic experience, and that it had made her a stronger person. "I'm glad I went through it,these memories made up my youth". She is now writing an autobiography of her war experiences.
